A cake for the beloved mother in law

27 January 2012
A cake for the beloved mother in law

Mothers in law inspire many stories. And while the relations between the members of a household are always a very intimate thing, relations between a mother in law and a son in law are a particular phenomenon. Suffice it to say that the internet contains a voluminous site dedicated to stories about mothers.

A Russian son in law recently made a contribution to this worldwide tradition. He registered a design patent for a cake. The design would have gone unnoticed if not for its peculiar name. The description of the patent gives the name of the cake as «A cake for the beloved mother in law». An attempt by a son in law to express his love to his new mother? Perhaps. But let us look at the cake more closely. Do the white dots covering the red caps remind you of anything? Exactly. For those unfamiliar with mycology, the inventor sincerely explains in the specification for the patent that the particular features are three dimensional elements shaped as boletuses and toadstools with stalks covered with crumbs. Toadstools are poisonous. One may appreciate the black humour of the inventor and only hope that his activities were not inspired by his family life.

Anyway, the patent ceased to be effective because the patent owner did not pay the maintenance fee. Was that because he ate the cake himself, or felt remorse? Let us hope for the latter.
