19th Gorodissky Annual Seminar “IP protection strategies for successful development of the company”

The 19th Annual Seminar “IP Protection Strategies for Successful Development of the company” was held online by Gorodissky & Partners.

During 3 days, leading IP attorneys and lawyers of the Moscow and Novosibirsk offices, as well as invited speakers from Germany held 3 sessions: patents, trademarks and industrial designs and legal aspects. The most important practical issues and development trends in IP were highlighted at the seminar.

The first day of the seminar was devoted to patents and opened a new educational project of the firm "IP Practice around the globe". During the session, the experts discussed the specifics of IP protection in Germany; respect for authorship; European Patent Convention and Unified Patent; peculiarities of patent prosecution in German and European PTOs; consequences of compulsory licensing practice; problems of providers of highly specialized services (services in the field of IP).

The trademarks and industrial designs session included six presentations. Among others, the following issues were discussed: chances to prevent registration of conflicting designations at the application stage; peculiarities of protection of graphic and verbal elements of a trademark, Cyrillic and Latin inscriptions, significant and insignificant changes in a trademark; nuances in food trademarks registration; protectable and unprotectable trademark elements and unobvious conditions for the designation to obtain distinctiveness as a result of its use; ways to obtain industrial design and trademark protection on the territory of the EAEU; features of registration of pictures and logos.

The final day of the seminar was devoted to legal aspects of IP protection. Gorodissky lawyers discussed a wide range of practical issues and shared their experience regarding latest court decisions affecting the IP disputes resolution practice in Russia and the use of others’ trademarks for information purposes. Examined cases of dismissal of claims based on abuse of law, analyzed legal risks and ways to reduce them in cases of comparative advertising and benefit claims. Discussed the features of IP asset management in Russia and raised the trending issue of supervisory inspections of Roskomnadzor in the field of personal data.

The seminar gathered representatives of corporations, lawyers, patent and trademark attorneys, R&D centers and representatives of industrial, insurance, commercial, food, chemical and pharmaceutical companies from 42 cities and 9 countries – over 200 registrants in total. Some attendees participate in the Gorodissky annual seminar year by year.
